2009 Mengeham Rythe Open

The Mengeham Rythe Sailng Club Open Meeting took place on the 9th & 10th May. Sailing Instructions and an Entry form can be downloaded from the home page of their web site (www.mengeham.org.uk).

Report by Jonathan Osgood

The Ospreys gathered in anticipation at Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club. The forecast was good, Force 3-4 on Saturday and Force 3 on Sunday.

The racing on Saturday was tight but Richard and Mark Hartley always managed to come out on top. First place was usually hotly contested by Martin Cooney and Peter Frith although a careless capsize on the first race when leading put them into last place although they managed to fight back up to 3rd by the finish piping John Shenton and Steve Offer on the line. In the second race the youngest member of the fleet teenager Alexandra Willis, sailing with dad, came in 3rd. The race officer showed great skill and determination in getting the 3rd race off despite having to relay the course due to a wind shift. The late finish created a challenge for the fleet beating up the creek to the club against the wind and tide in virtually no water.

After a good social on Saturday night Sunday dawned with clear skies and in the first race Nick Jones and Peter Grieg lead the way to the windward mark although they let through Frith / Cooney and the Hartley's through with Frith and Cooney breaking the Hartley's monopoly on the Bullets. The wind again shifted forcing the Race officer to change the course for the last race, the Hartley's restored there monopoly on the win followed by Paul Heather and Jonathan Osgood with Jones / Greig once again 3rd.

Thanks to Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club for putting on such a good event.
